Bone Grafting and Sinus Lifting
Preparatory procedures that may be recommended where there is not enough bone to support an implant.
About this treatment
Where the jawbone is too thin or too short for an implant, the treating clinician may recommend a bone graft, or a sinus lift in the upper jaw, to create a more suitable foundation. These are preparatory procedures rather than treatments in their own right.
Who it may suit
The need for grafting is identified from imaging and clinical examination. Not every implant case requires it.
What the journey involves
- 1Imaging to assess bone height and width
- 2Discussion of whether grafting is recommended and why
- 3The grafting or sinus procedure carried out by the treating clinician
- 4A healing period before implant placement is reconsidered
- 5Review imaging and the next stage of the plan
Things to consider
- Healing after grafting typically takes several months before implants can be placed.
- Grafting adds appointments and time to the overall treatment journey.
- As with any surgical procedure, risks are explained by the treating clinician beforehand.
This page is general information and is not a diagnosis or a recommendation. Suitability and outcomes depend on an individual clinical assessment by a registered dental professional, and results vary between patients. We do not publish prices because costs depend on the plan agreed after assessment.
